Our focus and interests are research, design, and development of complex, integrated computing systems. Jointly with our colleagues and partners, we had pioneered the area known as the engineering of computer-based systems (ECBS). Our key contributions are seminal works in model-based design that established the theoretical basis of ECBS, bringing ECBS principles to practice in a number of significant engineering applications, namely VLSI design and manufacturing (SRC Corporation, Siemens), embedded systems design and testing (Siemens, Infineon, and Nokia), computer-assisted surgery (clinical medicine), and national security (US Department of Defense).

We pursue projects in formal foundations and applications for model-based design of complex, heterogeneous systems from which many ECBS applications have been derived. Our approach, rooted in the fact that complex systems design

belongs to the class of computationally hard problems, resulted in a model-based design, a method for virtual prototyping of heterogeneous systems. Our more recent work in design and engineering of systems for minimally invasive surgical training and computer-assisted surgery has strong societal implications, namely the improvement of patients' safety.

The narrative summary of our research activities and accomplishments cannot be complete without enumerating the measures of graduate and undergraduate student success. MBDL has graduated 17 PhD and 35 MSc students. We make a concerted effort to provide full time financial support through grants and contracts for both graduate and undergraduate students.

For all of us at MBDL,
